Deuce, an American Bulldog service dog from Pennsylvania was surprised with the birthday party of a lifetime. With Deuce’s first birthday coming up, Charles Wilson-Adams, his dog owner, planned a party to show his love for his canine friend (Pasquini). The party was exactly like a conventional party for a person, including a happy birthday banner, plates, napkins, and a cake. There was even a theme, Stars Wars, following the structure of a normal party (Pasquini). The party invites consisted of family and friends, and in addition, there was a father-son dance. The dog is said, by the family members attending, to being “happily spoiled” for being treated exactly like a human child (Pasquini). The cuteness of the act and the overwhelming love blew up on social media.
Over Twitter, Instagram, and other media outlets, many people responded positively to the event because of its relatability. Here is a quote from Wilson-Addams explaining why he threw this party: “I had to do something special for him. And growing up I liked Star Wars, so I decided to throw him a Star Wars-themed birthday party. I actually met Deuce when I was going through a rough time in my life, and that’s another reason why I love him so much. And I felt as though I should throw a birthday party for him because I actually see him as my son”.
The genuine, loving quote above speaks a lot to the human-canine relationship. As a service dog, Deuce has become great therapeutic help to Charles, further strengthening the emotional connections between the two species. According to a study by the Purina Pet Institute, 43% of dog owners celebrate their dog’s birthday while 81% know their pet’s birthdays and recognize it in some way (Spector). Most of the 43% will buy special food or toys as gifts, just as they would a family member. These special indulgences lead to a greater consumer base for birthday-related dog products, explaining the growing trend of dog birthday parties.
